HYDRODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE AND NEAR WAKE CHARACTERIZATION OF AXIAL FLOW HYDROKINETIC TURBINE

April 6, 2017 | 3:00 PM | DeWalt Seminar Room, 2164 Martin Hall

Abstract:

Hydrokinetic energy devices are gaining increasing attention as a source of renewable energy. Tidal turbines, for example capture the kinetic energy in the water during flood and ebb tidal flows. The energy conversion is similar to that of wind turbines with the significant advantage of water turbines having much higher power densities. While wind turbines are a fairly mature technology with many commercial applications, tidal turbines are still in the research and development phases. This talk will review the experimental program to study hydrodynamic performance and near wake flow structure of a 1/25th scale model (Diameter D=0.8m) of a two-bladed horizontal axis tidal turbine. The turbine is based on a representative horizontal axis turbine (Reference Model#1) by Department of Energy (DOE). Specifically, the talk will address the turbine performance differences in a steady flow and in the presence of surface gravity waves, as well as flow structure and turbulence in the wake up to two diameters downstream from the rotor plane obtained using an in-house designed underwater PIV system.
