The vision of the Laboratory for Control and Information Systems is to advance health monitoring and maintenance methodologies applicable to a wide range of dynamic systems by exploiting control and systems theory, with priority emphasis on bio-systems, health and medicine, as well as mechanical systems and structures.  To this aim, our research activity covers a number of aspects related to non-intrusive and ubiquitous sensing, 1st-principles modeling combined with system identification and signal processing, condition monitoring and fault diagnostics via on-line estimation and analytical redundancy techniques, and maintenance and intervention via decision making and closed-loop control.  Our current focus areas are 1) physiological systems monitoring, 2) decision-assist, closed-loop control, fault diagnostics and accommodation challenges in critical care resuscitation, and 3) resilient and context-aware medical cyber-physical systems.

Mathematical Modeling, System Identification, Closed-Loop Control, Health Monitoring, Fault Diagnostics and Accommodation in Dynamic Systems with Emphasis on Challenges in Health and Medicine; Physiological Monitoring and Closed-Loop Control; Medical Cyber-Physical Systems

Current research endeavor at the Laboratory for Control and Information Systems concerns systematic development and assessment of next-generation autonomous medical and healthcare systems, by (i) elucidating sophisticated mechanisms underlying physiological systems and processes bearing clinical relevance via the development and analysis of medical digital twins (M-DTs: trustworthy mathematical models that can replicate the physiological process behaviors) and (ii) leveraging M-DTs and novel insights garnered from M-DTs in the disciplined development and assessment of innovative autonomous medical diagnostic and therapeutic systems.

The Laboratory for Control and Information Systems currently has 4 core thrust areas, namely: (i) physiological signals and systems analysis, (ii) psycho-physiological monitoring, (iii) physiological monitoring and closed-loop control (PM-CLC), and (iv) cardiovascular health and disease monitoring.  In the physiological signals and systems analysis area, my research aims at advancing knowledge on the physical mechanisms and implications pertaining to physiological signals and systems, and transforming such knowledge into innovative wearable-based healthcare systems.  In the psycho-physiological monitoring area, my research aims at developing transformative monitoring paradigms for physiological and mental health superior to the state-of-the-art in accuracy and convenience.  In the PM-CLC area, my research aims at developing M-DTs suited to the development and assessment of PM-CLC systems, M-DT-based virtual patient generation methodology suited to the trustworthy assessment of medical autonomy, M-DT-based PM-CLC algorithms, and wearable bio-robotics.  In the cardiovascular health and disease monitoring area, my research aims at developing a low-cost, non-invasive, and personalized paradigm for cardiovascular health assessment as well as cardiovascular disease detection and diagnosis.
