In September, Dr. James M. Wallace, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, gave a lecture on turbulent boundary layers at the Turbulence Colloquium Marseille 2011 in Marseille, France. Prof. Wallace’s lecture, “Highlights of Fifty Years of Turbulent Boundary Layer Research” focused both on important development innovations in the past half-century of research on turbulent boundary layers as well as future challenges that researchers in the field will face.

The first Colloquium on Turbulence was held in September 1961. Uniting important scholars in the field of turbulence research, the colloquium featured review lectures and discussions about the state of the field. The Turbulence Colloquium Marseille 2011 featuring nine speakers and seven sessions dedicated to different types of turbulent flow.

Prof. Wallace, the director of Maryland’s renowned Gemstone honors program, earned his D.Phil from Oxford University in 1969. For more information on his work, visit his website. To see a copy of the notes from his lecture, visit lecture notes.
