About the Competition

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

Formula SAE® is a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers).

About the Teams

Team Baja consists of freshmen and sophomores working together outside of classes to create a race-worthy offroad baja vehicle for competition in the FSAE events.

Team Formula is a student-led team based in and out of class to design, construct, test, and race a formula race car in national FSAE events. The very successful team is highly-ranked among the competition.

This competition challenges students from various engineering disciplines to delve into broad areas of underwater technology advancement and to provide them an educational experience that translates their theoretical knowledge into reality, foster advances in subsea vehicle hydrodynamic, propulsion and life support systems, and increase public awareness of the challenges people face in working in and exploring the ocean depths.

Modern travel is anything but convenient: Long delays sitting in airports, traffic that sits at a standstill, and trains that make endless stops on their way to the next big city. Hyperloop aims to eliminate all of that. Magnetically levitating at speeds nearing the speed of sound through a vacuumed out tube, Hyperloop pods will provide quick, safe, and affordable travel over both short and long distances.

In the second SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition held August 25–27a team of UMD undergrads was one of only six selected to complete an open air run in the Hyperlooptube. The team, UMD Loop, competed against 24 international teams in this round of the competition.
