Rudy Awarded Second Place at Army Research Lab Symposium

Mechanical engineering Ph.D. student Ryan Rudy was awarded second place in the Army Research Laboratory’s (ARL) 2011 Summer Student Symposium for a paper and presentation. Rudy’s research involved the development of a millimeter-scale traveling wave ultrasonic motor. The motor, Rudy noted, “is orders of magnitude smaller than traditional macro-scale ultrasonic motors.” Using finite element analysis, analytical simulation, and MEMS fabrication techniques, Rudy was able to create a motor that significantly approves upon other designs: “These motors offer compact high-torque low power rotary actuation capabilities that are currently unavailable at this size scale,” he said.
