Innovative technologies for next-generation product manufacturing, devices and systems to probe biological processes, materials and processes for energy generation and storage

Don DeVoe, Professor and Associate Chair of Research and Administration

Research in mechanical and reliability engineering at the University of Maryland is driving advances across multiple foundational sciences and critical applications. Thanks to our active research relationships with major research organizations, private companies, and government agencies, we generate transformational knowledge and achieve translational impact on real-world practice.

A multi-institutional team of researchers, led by our faculty and funded by the Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative, is investigating disorder-influenced collective dynamics of nonlinear oscillator systems with relevance to networks of gyroscopes, precision timing devices, miniature antennas, and so on. Another team, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is developing and applying analytical models of influenza transmission that account for the turbulent nature of indoor airflows. A third team, funded by the National Science Foundation Quantum Sensing Challenges for Transformational Advances in Quantum Systems program, is exploring quantum behaviors of light that can be used for precision sensing and detection. A fourth team, funded by the Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, is developing a decision support software tool to help improve the efficiency of cooling systems used in data centers.

Our Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering sits at the forefront of international standards development for critical electronic systems. Our Center for Environmental Energy Engineering is a leader in research related to modeling and optimization tools for energy conversion systems. Our Center for Risk and Reliability is advancing critical techniques for prognostics and health management of liquid hydrogen storage systems.

It is no wonder that the world goes to Maryland.
