Alex Mehr

Alumnus Alex Mehr (M.S., Ph.D. ‘03) knows the value of an exceptional education. An Iranian immigrant, Alex migrated to the United States in pursuit of the educational opportunities that UMD offered. Those experiences laid the groundwork for Alex’s future endeavors, including those beyond the typical engineering career path.

Through philanthropy, Alex hopes to show his gratitude to UMD and the Mechanical Engineering Department in particular. He established the Alex Mehr Endowed Distinguished Graduate Fellowship to offset the cost of education for graduate students studying design decision-making, data-driven systems, systems optimization, and systems engineering.

Sean and Sarah Durbin

Seizing opportunities during undergraduate education can shape the trajectory of a professional career, as Sean Durbin (B.S. ’93, mechanical engineering) and his wife Sarah Durbin (B.S. ’92, design) well know.

For Sean and Sarah, it is a privilege to assist and reward UMD students with strong potential in mechanical engineering. They value the multi-disciplinary nature of the degree, the solid foundation that it provides in learning how to learn, and UMD’s role in their family’s global life experiences. They have established the Sean and Sarah Durbin Endowed Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering with the hope of strengthening the talent pipeline of mechanical engineers with technical skills and global perspectives.
