Schmidt to Attend Women in Engineering Leadership Institute Leadership Conference

Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Linda Schmidt has been selected from a group of more than 90 nominees to participate in the Women in Engineering Leadership Institute (WELI) Leadership Conference April 28 through May 1st, 2005 in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Specific goals for the conference are: to give participants more information about leadership opportunities and the challenges and rewards of academic leadership; form a group of female engineers for discussion, mentoring and fun; and to form a network that will help the participants in their future career plans.

Participants were selected by WELI through a nomination process. The conference is supported by the National Science Foundation, University of Central Florida, Northeastern University and University of Pennsylvania.

The Women in Engineering Leadership Institute (WELI) was originally formed by attendees of the 2000 Women in Engineering Leadership Conference, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. At this conference, participants engaged in leadership development activities specific to academic leadership by women in engineering. Following the conference many were committed to seeing this development offered to more women. WELI was born with the following mission:

To provide training, mentoring, and networking opportunities for women engineering faculty in academic leadership

To provide programs to encourage women engineering PhD students to consider an academic career

To serve as a clearinghouse for information and data related to women in academic leadership
