The University of Maryland’s Baja SAE team returned from the Baja SAE Wisconsin competition in Madison which took place June 7 – 10.  The goal for the 16 member team comprised of freshmen and sophomores was to build a car and compete successfully against teams of upperclassmen and graduate students from universities around the world.  The car was completed just before the team left to compete.

Baja CarThe team participated in events that tested their car’s maneuverability, acceleration, suspension and traction, and endurance. They were unable to finish the suspension and traction event due to a throttle failure, but repaired it in time to compete in the main endurance challenge.  The team managed to stay on course on this track while driving through a harsh, muddy course when other teams were towed off the course and finished in 40th place.  The team placed highest in the maneuverability challenge at 33rd place.  "Even though each day was a long struggle to get through, all the students had big smiles on their faces at the end," faculty advisor Greg Schultz said. Schultz was proud of their fighting spirit and positive attitude throughout the race.  They finished overall at 53rd place out of 115 schools registered to compete.
