Kim to Chair Two Conferences
Department of Mechanical Engineering Keystone Professor Jungho Kim is chairing two conferences: the 9th International Topical Team Workshop (ITTW) on Two-phase Systems for Ground and Space Applications taking place September 22-26, 2014 in Baltimore, Md. and the 9th International Conference on Boiling and Condensation Heat Transfer taking place April 26-30, 2015 in Boulder, Colo.
The ITTW conference's focus is "to provide researchers the opportunity to present and discuss novel work, while also identifying future needs in this critical area of research." The topics of discussion include: experiments in microgravity, boiling, evaporation and condensation, films, layers and interfaces, among others. The event features keynote presentations from national and international researchers and is being sponsored by the University of Maryland Department of Mechanical Engineering and NASA.
The 9th International Conference on Boiling and Condensation Heat Transfer, co-sponsored by the University of Maryland Department of Mechanical Engineering and the University of Colorado at Boulder, will feature a range of presentations on research related to boiling, condensation, heat transfer enhancement and physical and numerical modeling. A selection of topics include: flow boiling in micro- and macro-channels, condensation and boiling in plate heat exchangers, critical heat flux, novel two-phase measurement and visualization techniques and enhanced bundle boiling.
Kim received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1990. He is the leader of Mechanical Engineering's Thermal, Fluids and Energy Systems Division and directs the University of Maryland's Phase Change Heat Transfer Lab. In 2011, Kim worked with John McQuillen, project scientist at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Ohio, to study how boiling is altered in zero-gravity. Their experiment, the Microheater Array Boiling Experiment (MABE), was sent to the International Space Station for testing. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including becoming an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow in 2005.
