Professor Emeritus Named to Royal Society of Canada
Mechanical Engineering Professor Emeritus Ugo Piomelli was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). He is one of 87 new Fellows elected in 2015 as part of the RSC, which supports the field of research and education in Canada.
Piomelli, who now serves as the Canada Research Chair and Professor in Computational Science and Engineering at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, conducts research in fluid dynamics and turbulence physics. He has made fundamental contributions to the profession by developing numerical models for predicting turbulent flows, and by successfully applying these methods to increase the understanding of turbulence physics. The models he developed are commonly used by industrial and research communities such as aerospace, geophysics, meteorology and mechanical and environmental engineering.
He joined the department at the University of Maryland in 1987 and left in 2008. During his tenure he held multiple positions in Mechanical Engineering, including Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies. Additionally, he served as the Associate Editor of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Journal of Fluids Engineering and Journal of Turbulence.
The Royal Society of Canada is the senior and most prestigious academic society in Canada. Members represent a wide range of academic fields, including the arts, social and natural sciences and humanities.
He will be inducted into the academies of the RSC during the annual Induction and Award Ceremony on Friday, November 27, 2015 at the Fairmont Express in Victoria, BC.
